What Is an SEL Coach?

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) refers to the skills student-athletes use to understand themselves, manage emotions, and make thoughtful choices in real-life situations—on and off the court.

As an SEL Hoops Coach, I focus on the inner side of development. Through intentional conversation, observation, and movement-based experiences, I help student-athletes increase awareness of what’s happening internally and how it shows up in their actions—during basketball, in the classroom, and at home.

This approach is especially supportive for student-athletes who may experience challenges with focus, emotional regulation, transitions, or impulse control, including those with ADHD, ADD, or IEPs, while remaining inclusive and beneficial for all learners.

SEL coaching supports student-athletes in developing:

  • Emotional awareness

  • Self-regulation and calming strategies

  • Confidence after mistakes

  • Focus and decision-making

  • Healthy responses to pressure and feedback

SEL Hoops Coaching is not therapy. I am not a licensed therapist, and I do not diagnose or treat mental health conditions. Instead, I coach practical, skill-based strategies through basketball, movement, and guided conversation. These tools align well with IEP and 504 goals related to self-regulation, executive functioning, social awareness, and behavioral support, and can be applied immediately in real-world settings.

At The Inner 180, student-athletes are not defined by labels, behaviors, or struggles. They are supported as whole individuals. The goal is simple but powerful: to help student-athletes learn how to pause, reset, and respond with awareness, confidence, and self-trust—skills that extend far beyond the game.
